Industrial News Buzz - Conveyor belts are just conveyor belts right? The most interesting variables aren't much more than whether you need a heavy duty belt or not, or whether a different kind of conveying system like a conveyor chain might be more appropriate. Well, some designers have taken the opportunity to convert conveyor belts used in public spaces into something a little more interesting. From rivers of lava to swimming pools, below is a list of some of the most innovative reinventions of the humble conveyor belts made manifest in the past few years.
1.Milky Way Caramel Chocolate Bar
In order to advertise a new "stretchy caramel" chocolate bar, Mars adapted conveyor belts in a supermarket to demonstrate just how stretchy their new caramel milky bar really was. They attached an image of one half of the chocolate bar in packaging to the metal end of the conveyor belt, whilst the best itself had a long strip of caramel running down it with the other part of the chocolate bar at the end. As the belt moved it appeared the chocolate bar and caramel got longer and longer.
2.Loony Tunes in Brazilian Airport
In order to advertise a new Loony Tunes film, media whizzes in Brazil decided to place two characters ; Tweety pie and Sylvester (in bird cage and trunk, respectively), on a luggage conveyor belt in a Sao Paulo airport in Brazil. The aim was to create a non intrusive but memorable advert.
3.Lava Flow at Wellington Airport, New Zealand
To raise awareness of a Pompei Exhibition at the National Museum in New Zealand, a baggage carousel was adorned with images to imitate the flow of lava from a volcano. Red hot magma appeared to slow meander around the belt.
4.Swimming Pool Conveyor Belt at Gulfport-Biloxi Airport
At the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport a baggage belt was converted to give the appearance of a swimming pool underneath glass. The carousel had images of swimmers in the water to make the conveyor belt seem even more life-like.
5.Roulette Wheel at Marco Polo Airport, Venice
An advertising agency in Italy designed a luggage belt to imitate the look of a roulette wheel in order to advertise a new casino. The belt came complete with a green zero segment and black and red numbered segments with bags and luggage imitating the white ball which settles on a number during a roulette game.
6.Denver Water River Belt
The Denver Water company, in an effort to reduce water wastage set up campaigns in Denver supermarkets which redesigned conveyor belts at the check out to look like gushing rivers. The design had a log like purchase divider with "keep our rivers flowing. Use only what you need." written on it.
These six designs are just a few illustrations of the clever ways in which everyday spaces, not normally thought of as advertising or creative spaces can be converted into surprising and entertaining design features.
With traditional advertising methods becoming increasingly staid and unappealing to the consumer these images breathe a breath of fresh air into the media world by converting our trusty friend the conveyor belt, into so much more than a mechanical tool.
